Internationalization in the presentation in Brussels of the candidacy of Madrid to be chosen as the European Headquarters of the Anti-Money Laundering Authority
INTERNATIONALIZATION
- The Madrid City Council, the Madrid Regional Government and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation have jointly presented the candidacy to show the unity of the three administrations in the face of what they consider an extraordinary opportunity for Spain and for Madrid.
- Madrid more than meets the requisites that, according to the European Parliament, the city that will host the European Anti-Money Laundering Authority (AMLA).
- The capital offers fully equipped offices in the Crystal Tower, located in the Cuatro Torres Business Area, to host the facilities of AMLA.
The General Coordinator of the Madrid City Council, Matilde García Duarte, and the acting Delegate Councilor of Internationalization and Cooperation, Mr. Santiago Saura, accompanied by the Director General of Tourism, Mr. Héctor Coronel, have participated in the presentation in Brussels of the Madrid’s candidacy to host the headquarters of the European Anti-Money Laundering Authority (AMLA). This new institution, which has already been approved by the EU as a central authority with supervisory, regulatory and coordination responsibilities between units of financial intelligence of the Member States, is in the process of being created.
From those in charge of the presentation of the candidacy in the REPER in Brussels, the Councillor Santiago Saura made the presentation on behalf of the Madrid City Council, in addition to the General Secretary of the Treasury and International Financing of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation and the General Director of Economy of the Madrilenian Regional Government.
In his intervention, the Councillor focused on explaining the excellent conditions that Madrid has in all the spheres and that make our city the most suitable to host this important European Authority headquarters. Madrid combines the best quality of life (with the highest life expectancy from all European regions) with economic strength and excellent opportunities and services for this European Authority, its staff and their families: job opportunities, health services, green zones, digital connectivity, educative offer with international character, vibrant cultural offer, extensive and dense sustainable public transport network, etc. All these with the lowest cost in comparison to other big European cities and in a city that has a proven success in hosting and organizing major international events. Madrid's candidacy offers, in addition, as explained by the Councilor, a location and iconic building for this European Authority: The Crystal Tower, the tallest skyscraper in Spain, in the area of the Cinco Torres and Madrid Nuevo Norte, in the financial center of our city and part of the avantgarde of the city of Madrid's roadmap towards climate neutrality. A building that counts with one of the biggest sustainability and security standards, which will be available from the very first moment the European Authority starts operating and which is perfectly and quickly connected to both the airport and the rest of the city.
The act of presenting the candidacy of Madrid, which has been carried out jointly by the City Council, the Madrid Regional Government, and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation as a demonstration of unity among the three administrations in the face of what is considered an extraordinary opportunity for Spain and Madrid, has also involved the participation of the Secretary General of the Treasury and International Financing, Mr. Carlos Cuerpo, as well as Mr. Juan Manuel López Zafra, Director General of Economy of the Community of Madrid, accompanied by the Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Spain to the EU, Mr. Marcos Alonso.
The presentation took place in the Permanent Representation of Spain in the European Union (REPER), before the main representatives of different interest groups, including representatives of different interest groups, among which were MEPs, members of the European Commission and the different member states, who will be responsible for evaluating the selection process in the headquarters, together with the heads of various associations and private entities from related sectors.
Representing Madrid City Council, the Director General of Cooperation and Global Citizenship, have accompanied the Councilor.
